MIAMI | Solo Exhibition February 17 - March 31, 2018
Fabien Castanier Gallery is very excited to present Wanderlust, solo exhibition for artist JonOne. The exhibition coincides with Miami’s Art Wynwood art fair on President’s Day Weekend, which runs February 15-19. This is the fourth solo exhibition for JonOne with the gallery and his first in Miami, featuring all new works on canvas by the internationally acclaimed urban contemporary artist.
JonOne (b. 1963, New York) is one of the most influential urban artists of his generation. He grew up in Harlem, New York, where he discovered the thrill and personal expression found through painting in the streets and on train cars. A critical moment in the history of graffiti occurred during this time in the 1980s, and JonOne chose to transport his New York graffiti roots to the streets of Paris when he was only 20 years old. Establishing his life in France, he has since grown his career and reputation for the past 30 years with a unique style, unparalleled in his genre.
From the beginning, JonOne’s paintings have been influenced by movement, color, and the energy of the city. While other artists were working figuratively or with stylized lettering, Jon’s pieces were more akin to abstract expressionism. The dynamic brush strokes and vibrant colors found in his compositions speak volumes on his identity as an artist and his character. His works are at once universal revelations and deeply personal musings on life’s struggles and triumphs. His paintings take you on a journey through his story – abound with spirit and the endless desire for exploration and discovery.
JonOne has worked on a number of collaborations, lending original designs of his style to notable companies, such as Perrier, Air France, Lacoste, and Guerlain. Most recently he designed a limited edition bottle for Hennessey. He has also exhibited at several important galleries and institutions, including the Fondation Cartier for Contemporary Art and the Grand Palais in Paris. In 2015, he was given the Legion of Honor from France, celebrating the achievement with a painting “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” which was unveiled at the Palais Bourbon, the seat of the French National Assembly.PRESS RELEASE PDF
